English (ENL1W) enables students to continue to develop the knowledge and skills that they need for reading, writing, and oral and visual communication. Throughout the course, we shall enhance media literacy and critical literacy skills, and to develop and apply transferable skills, including digital literacy. Students will also make connections to their lived experiences and to society, and increase their understanding of the importance of language and literacy across the curriculum. In the previous learning activity, we spent time reflecting on strengths and areas of growth to create meaningful learning goals for this course. We will be mindful to reflect on those goals often and check in with our own progress toward achieving them.
In this learning activity, the process of reflection continues, but with a different purpose. We will learn about bias and the different types of biases. We will then apply this knowledge to ourselves through reflection about our identity and how aspects of who we are, the world in which we live, and the ways we think can be influenced by bias, often without being aware of it. Lastly, we will develop strategies and skills to manage the influence our biases have on the ways we understand and create texts.
